ISSUES AND CONCERNS CONFRONTING THE DAIRY INDUSTRY

Poor Genetics of Dairy Herd

 Very low milk production

Short lactation period

Irregular Calving Interval

No Breeding Program

Slow herd build up

No dairy Nucleus Farm

Lack of Private sector interest to engage in commercial Dairy farming

Lack of research effort by government

No serious effort by the government to upgrade existing herd.

  High Cost of Imports

Dependency on other countries for the local milk needs

  Sub standard consumption

NEGATIVE PERCEPTIONS TOWARDS DAIRY FEASIBILITY IN THE PHILIPPINES

Those pure breeds dairy cattle is not adaptable in the Philippines

Those crosses of either of the top four dairy breeds will not perform on the tropics

Filipinos are not milk drinkers like that of the Europeans, Americans and other temperate regions.

We lack the technology on processing

Dairying requires vast area of pasture lands

PROSPECTS FOR DEVELOPMENT

Philippine has its potential in animals, land, climate and technology

The enough population of cattle, carabaos, and goats can be tapped as breeding base for an intensive dairy upgrading.

Climate in the country generally favors the production of fodders and other crops, the residues and by-products of which can be use as feeds.

Technology has been generated through the years by colleges and other institutions
  Bureau of Animal Industry

  Dairy training and Institutions

Private individual and Agencies (NGO)
