Important considerations in the selection of the site for dairying:

Market – Farmers must be assured of a market that can absorb milk and other dairy products at a reasonable price.

Technology and support system – Technology supports through extension, education, veterinary services, breeding services, etc should be available particularly for backyard producers who may have to rely on government’s technicians/agencies for this kind of support.

Accessibility of production inputs – Production inputs like concentrate feeds and veterinary drugs must be available at reasonable price.

Feeds – The farm should be located in an area where fodder crops can be economically produced. Areas planted to coconut, perennial crops or marginally utilized land can be used for fodder production. It is advantageous if crop residues and farm by-products which can be used as feed e.g. sugarcane tops, corn stover, straw, etc are available.
